Health Benefits of Spices*

Cinnamon Sticks

Cinnamon is  high in cinnamaldehyde, which is thought to be responsible for most of cinnamon’s possible health benefits which may include antitumor, anti-inflammatory, ​ and antimicrobial properties.

Star anise arrived in Europe in the 15th century through spice trails. It has a large amount of anethole which makes it 13x sweeter than sugar. Star Anise has been used in traditional medicines for thousands of years. It has powerful bioactive compounds that may help treat fungal, bacterial, and viral  infections.

Cloves are best known as a sweet and aromatic spice, but they have also been used in traditional medicine. Recent  studies suggests that the compounds in cloves may have several health benefits, including supporting liver health and helping stabilize blood sugar levels.

Cardamom is known as the "Queen of Spices." It contains antioxidants, such as flavonoids and terpenoids which may protect your cells from damage caused by free radicals. Cardamom also has vitamin A & vitamin C.  It may aid in digestion, lower blood pressure, and reduce inflammation. Cardamom has been studied for its effects in weight loss too.

Saffron blooms in the fall and it has 3 stigma, or saffron threads, in each flower. It takes 88,000 saffron threads to make 1 kilogram of saffron.  It is nicknamed the sunshine spice due to its color and because it is thought to elevate serotonin and dopamine.  It may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties.  It may also aid in weight loss.

Rose petals are a source of vitamins and antioxidants.  They may have anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and antimicrobial properties as well. Rose petals may improve mood and mitigate headaches. They are noted in traditional medicine for soothing throats and colds.
